SOFT FRUIT

Soft FruitThis term includes fruit such as strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries.

At Aylett Nurseries we have a large and varied stock of fruit that will produce rewarding yields, and be decorative in the kitchen garden or in the ornamental border.

Soft FruitIn most gardens there should be room to grow at least some Soft Fruits for use in the home. They occupy the minimum of space, and you have the pleasure of eating delicious health giving fruit.

Generally easy to grow, the best crops will be obtained when growing in fruit cages, as birds also enjoy the fruits.

Top fruit includes plums, cherries, apples, and pears

Fruit trees will succeed in most garden soils that are not excessively acid or alkaline and are best in full sun and sheltered from cold winds.

They are available on a variety of rootstocks which means there is a size to suit every garden.

Pollination:

ApplesApples will require cross pollination between different varieties to ensure good fruit set. We have a list of varieties available in their groups in accordance with the Royal Horticultural Society pollination table. Some varieties do not produce pollen; these are Triploids and require groups of 3 trees to ensure pollination.

Apples can be pollinated by some Crab Apples (Malus), e.g. John Downie or Golden Hornet, but will not pollinate Pears.
