Bathroom
Considerations: Light Levels – Natural light from a window will be vital for a plant to survive, but the level of light needed will vary depending on the plant.
Humidity – Your bathroom offers some humidity that many plants will love. Plants that normally thrive in warmer, humid weather in their native country will be well placed in a bathroom.
Temperature – Like us, many plants dislike a cold draught, and to be placed right by the dry heat of a hot radiator will damage leaves.
Check our plant labels and chat to our Houseplant team to help you select the right plant for your bathroom.
Plants suitable for the bathroom: Air Plants, Begonia, Bromeliads, Aglaonema, Aspidistra (suitable for low light), Codiaeum, Ferns, Spathiphyllum, and Vanda orchid. Further plant ideas can be found on our Plant Finder.
Note – always check if a plant is an irritant or is toxic if you have young children or pets.
Kitchen
Considerations: Light Levels – Natural light will be vital for a plant to survive. Check our plant labels to see if you can offer the right light for the plant you like.
Humidity – Kitchens tend to be warm and humid. Look for plants that will love these conditions.
Space – Some modern houses have open plan kitchen / family rooms. This can give you the opportunity to go for a statement plant, like a large Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle Leaf Fig) or Monstera (Swiss Cheese Plant) perfectly placed to bring the kitchen and living areas together. If space is limited, a bright windowsill is perfect for your favourite culinary herbs, like Basil and Dill or Parsley and Chives. Or if surfaces are at a premium, then consider a hanging plant, like the Epipremnum (Pothos Vine).
Plants suitable for the kitchen: Aloe Vera, Herbs, Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Air Plants, Phalaenopsis Orchid, Epipremnum (Pothos), Aglaonema, Chlorophytum (Spider Plant), Succulents and Sansevieria (Snake Plant). Further plant ideas can be found on our Plant Finder.
Living Room
Plants in the living room create a cosy and welcoming vibe whilst also working hard for you by purifying the air and reducing stress. Scientific studies (NASA 1989 study) show that many houseplants will filter out toxins from the air, lift your mood, ease anxiety, improve allergies and breathing and strengthen your connection to nature. Remember that plants need to be kept in tiptop condition. Keep them dust free and feed and water when required.
The top performing plants: Sansevieria Trifasciata (Snake Plant), Hedera Helix (English Ivy), Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Epipremnum Aureum (Pothos), Dracaena (Janet Craig).
Considerations: Light Levels: A bright and sunny room will also be warm. Look for plants that thrive in similar situations in their native country. Smaller cactus and succulent plants will enjoy a sunny windowsill and there are countless plants that will be well placed in your bright room.
Look at: Aloe, Cactus, Yucca, Areca Palm, Dracaena, Chlorophytum (Spider Plant), Ficus, Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)
Darker room? No worries… A living room that does not get the sun will benefit from houseplants that prefer the shady life but are no less beautiful. These plants may also be suitable for a no sun Hallway.
Consider: Zamioculcas (ZZ Plant), Sansevieria (Snake Plant), Epipremnum (Pothos), Aglaonema and Aspidistra Elatior.
At School and Work – Go for Green…
We spend a considerable proportion of our lives in education and work. Enhance these environments with plants! Research* into plants in a classroom has shown that students have improved spelling and learning in Maths and Science compared to a classroom void of plants. Additionally, a 20% increase in memory retention for those classes who have contact with plants.
In the office, green up your workspace! Health and wellbeing should be a priority in the workplace where indoor air can become polluted and stale. A good display of foliage plants will help to remove the toxins from the air created by equipment like photocopiers and printers. Plants should also be placed in areas where pollutants can be found in items such as cleaning products, inks and varnish, paper towels and paints, to name a few. Plants around the workplace have also shown to increase productivity and wellbeing.
In schools and workplaces, think specialist plants, loved for their beauty and ability to filter the air, and absorb pollutants.
Considerations: Light Levels – All plants need natural light from a window in order to survive and thrive. Check our plant labels for light requirements for the plants you like.
Maintenance – In a busy school or workplace, attention to our plants can be overlooked. Look for plants that prefer to be left to dry out before watering or get a rota going where you will find the green fingered folk more than willing to spend their morning tending to the resident plants.
At school, a ‘watering monitor’ and a ‘misting monitor’ will be much sort after jobs, where the Boston Fern gets a daily dose of water & misting to keep it happy!
Our top picks for your workspace and classroom…
Sansevieria (Snake Plant), Zamioculcas (ZZ Plant), Aloe Vera, Spathiphyllum, Monstera, Areca Palm, Ficus Elastica (Rubber Plant), Dracaena Janet Craig, Epipremnum (Pothos), Boston Fern.
