Fuchsia Nursery

Home Grown on our Nursery

Fuchsias are another of our home-grown specialities. In our production nursery, we grow over 50 different varieties, ensuring there’s a perfect Fuchsia for every garden space.  Once you have started growing these fascinating plants, you will not be able to stop adding to your collection as the range of colour and flower shapes is vast.

Fuchsias are particularly good for that semi-shaded site, giving a long display of colour. And the best part? Every single one of our 11,000 home-grown fuchsias is nurtured right here in our St. Albans nursery.

Plant Hardiness

We follow the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) plant hardiness classification to ensure you have clear guidance when selecting your fuchsias. Each variety we grow is clearly labelled with its hardiness rating, helping you make an informed choice.

  • H1 (Tender/Non-Hardy) – These varieties require winter protection or should be treated as summer annuals.
  • H2 (Semi-Hardy) – Suitable for overwintering in a frost-free, cool greenhouse, ensuring their survival for the following year.
  • H4 (Hardy) – These varieties can withstand winter conditions and will thrive in garden borders year after year.

Our Range

Fuchsias are available from the end of March through summer in our Seasonal Bedding greenhouse. Larger plants, ideal for adding spot colour in a garden border are available from the end of June into July. It important to remember that these plants cannot be planted out until risk of frost has passed so if you don’t have a heated greenhouse, we recommend waiting until the end of May when risk of frost should have passed.

Upright fuchsia varieties are perfect for the centre of baskets and containers, adding height and structure, while trailing varieties beautifully cascade over the edges, creating a stunning display.

To make selection easier, we’ve grouped our fuchsias into Upright and Trailing varieties — and our nursery team is always on hand to help! After carefully nurturing these plants, there’s nothing they love more than seeing them head off to new homes and gardens to be enjoyed.

History

Fuchsias were first discovered in the Dominican Republic in the late 17th Century by Father Charles Plumier, a missionary and botanist of that time. He named the plant Fuchsia triphylla coccinea after Leonard Fuchs, a German botanist who had died 100 years earlier.

Since the discovery of the species, they have been hybridised many times until we see the vast range of varieties that can be found today. They are very free-flowering, have various growth habits and flower shapes with colours that range from the flamboyant to cool white.
