Outdoor Plant of the Month – Autumn Colour
After a long hot summer and a lot of hard work to keep your garden looking fine Autumn has finally arrived. We have awoken to the first frosts and it may feel that your garden is now winding down for the winter months, but in actual fact Autumn is natures perfect time for planting and is the most fantastic, colourful time of the year!
It is often waxed lyrical about with Keats’ ‘Seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness’ to the National Garden Scheme citing it as ‘The year’s last loveliest smile’, to name just a few. How true these quotes. The light changes as the sun becomes lower in the sky and the foliage goes through a kaleidoscope of colours from deep saffron yellow through to crimson.
All of this can be re-created in your garden, and with optimal soil temperature and Autumn’s rain it’s the perfect time for your plants to establish themselves before they go dormant for winter.
Small Trees such as Acers, Liquidamber and Sorbus. Shrubs, including Euonymous, Cornus and even some Abies (Conifers) will give the desired effect. Add in some autumn berries and fruit (Pyracantha, Malus, Ilex (Holly)) and your garden will be picture perfect!
