Top Gardens to visit for some autumn colour

Autumn is undeniably one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Change in air temperature, sparkling morning dew and intricately woven cob-webs that magically appear each morning almost make us forget how much we miss the summer. The pièce de résistance is the magnificent display of trees dressed in their beautifully leafed gowns of kaleidoscopic shades of autumn that also decorate the surrounding grounds as they gradually wilt and begin to fall.

We have compiled a list of the top gardens you should absolutely visit this autumn!

Celebration Garden 
Our very own garden was created in 2015 in celebration of 60 years of Aylett Nurseries. Situated to the side of the Garden Centre,with access through the gates at the top of the carpark. Dahlias grown amongst the perennial plants and shrubs show just how fantastic and varied these late flowering summer plants can be.

Why not visit our Dahlia Coffee House and grab a takeaway coffee to enjoy as you wander around our glorious garden.

The garden is available to visit all year round but the best time is during the summer months when the Dahlias are also in flower. A Dahlia Information Booklet is available to help you choose  your plants for your garden next year.

Sheffield Park garden
This highly decorative picture perfect garden, in East Sussex, was designed with influences from both Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton and is home to five glorious lakes. Autumn is the time when this idyllic acreage truly comes alive. The trees comprising of Nyssa, Acer and Taxodiums varieties have been strategically placed around the outside of the lake and the result is the most splendid reflections of tonal tree colours on a resplendently sunny day.

The National Arboretum at Westonbirt
A stunning outdoor space, located in Tetbury, Gloucester and managed by the Forestry Commission. Home to 15,000 species of tree from different points of the world.  People travel from far and wide to enjoy ‘one of natures most breathtaking sights.’ During the Autumn months you can enjoy some wonderful Seasonal Trail walks to help you appreciate the spectrum of rustic colours from different perspectives. Shade and shadow really do make a distortion to this autumnal colour pallet.  Visit the garden here.

Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum
Established by the prolific plantsman Sir Harold Hillier in 1953, and now run as a charity under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council.  This gorgeous 180 acre garden makes for the perfect opportunity to capture photographs of the beautiful autumnal copper, gold and burnt orange hues. RHS Wisley
A visit to the Wild Garden at Wisley, Surrey, now more commonly known as Oakwood, is a must this season. The Japanese Maple trees are exquisite, their beautiful leaves morphing colour to shades of orange, golds and reds. They look incredible as the shafts of sunlight dance between their entwined branches.  The Wild Garden is also particularly lovely throughout autumn with an abundance of majestic trees adorned in the most breathtaking autumn colours.  Visit the garden here.

Great Dixter
Nestled in the beautiful county of Sussex, Great Dixter is home to three striking tiled and timbered bulk properties and a magnificent garden with nineteen different spaces. This includes a perfectly positioned prairie offering extensive views of the stunning trees and surrounding landscape. The Exotic Garden is particularly impressive in the Autumn and channels a tropical vibe of dahlias with solid vibrant colours of red, peach and coral.  Visit the garden here.

The Dahlia Border at Anglesey Abbey
The Dahlia & Formal Garden is a pure feast for the eyes, designed in 1952 by Lord Fairhaven. All the dahlias are grown on site and include seventy varieties of this stunning plant.
