Garden Watering Systems and Irrigation
Everyone knows that plants and gardens need watering, especially in hot, dry or windy weather.
Plants lose water through their leaves all the time. In warm weather, water is also lost from the soil by evaporation, so watering will need to be done more often. This makes watering one of the most important maintenance tasks, and one that must be done on a regular basis, especially in months when the temperature rises and plants lose water more quickly.
It is essential to ensure that there is enough water to replenish the roots, otherwise, despite all the light and feed available, plants will not be able to grow to their full potential.
At Aylett Nurseries we have a wide range of garden watering systems to help with watering your garden and keeping it alive and green.
Water Butts
Tap water does not provide the same benefit as rainwater does. One solution to this would be to install a waterbutt. Waterbutts are fantastic at storing the rain and giving you a steady supply of water during the summer months when rainfall can be unpredictable. Rainwater can be collected by using a diverter cut into a downpipe. Water falling from the gutter will be attracted to the sides of the downpipe, and when this arrives at the diverter it will be channelled to the waterbutt. When the waterbutt is full, the diverter overflows and the water continues on its original path down into the drain.
As an example of how much water you can save – if 25mm or 1” of rain falls on a 6’ x 8’ glasshouse you could collect 108 litres or over 24 gallons.
Using rainwater is the best thing you can do for your plants, and it’s free!

Hosepipes & Accessories
Plants lose water through their leaves all the time. It is essential to ensure there is enough to replenish the roots, otherwise, they will die. In warm weather, water is lost from the soil by evaporation, so watering will need to be done more often.
This makes watering one of the most important maintenance tasks, and one that must be done on a regular basis, especially in summer when it is hot and plants lose water more quickly.
Take special care of newly sown or planted plants and especially those in containers, as they run out of water more quickly than established plants in beds or the borders. Even though some plants have bigger root systems and more soil from which to collect water during the hotter months, even these plants will need extra care.
For watering your garden or washing the car using the mains water supply, there is a fabulous range of accessories to make the process easier and more efficient.
Information on care for your lawn is available in the Advice Centre. Other methods such as adding water crystals to compost or using different linings can be very successful in helping with this watering technique.
We stock a huge range of Hozelock accessories and hosepipes.
